Creative PieceIn my Illustration 4 class, someone started the
conversation about drawing from memory. My professor explained an exercise
where he would have students draw the model in the classroom, walk outside
into the hallway, and sketch the model's pose from memory, a practice we
all seemed to be interested in. Then the conversation turned to things we
had trouble drawing from memory and an appreciation for artists that could
skillfully draw from their imagination. We all agreed that drawing from
photo references is what we were comfortable with. And then someone said,
"You know what, I wouldn't be able to draw without a picture? A horse!"
The more I thought about it, the more I agreed and thought it would be
interesting to have friends and family draw a picture of a horse from
memory. I wanted to see if people would draw a frontal or full-body image,
so the only instructions I gave explained what I wanted, like a simple
line or color drawing of a horse. After collecting the pictures, I created
a collage image of a 'horse.'
